Where Nephrologists & Trainees Transform Kidney Care Together

Hands-On Workshops

Choose 2 Half-Day Workshops to Attend

1. Kidney Biopsy Academy (KBA)

Proficiency in percutaneous kidney biopsy is required for accreditation in nephrology. Medical practice trends have diminished the interest and exposure of nephrology fellows to kidney biopsies. Approximately 14% of renal biopsies are inadequate for diagnostic purposes because of technical reasons related to the biopsy. The goal of this course is to provide training in percutaneous renal biopsies to residents, fellows, and practicing physicians.

The hands-on KBA workshop utilizes:

  1. Kidney ultrasound simulation using SonoSim® Ultrasound Training

  2. Real time ultrasound of kidneys in simulated, live human subjects

  3. Kidney anatomy with plasticine-embedded torso sections from human cadavers

  4. Kidney anatomy with dissected cadavers

  5. US-based PKB simulation with mannequin (Blue Phantom™)

  6. US-based renal biopsy in lightly-embalmed cadavers

  7. Tissue retrieval adequacy examination by microscope and smartphone camera.

Results from the 2016 workshop were presented as an abstract, "An Integrated Pathology and Ultrasonography-Based Simulation Is an Effective Educational Tool for the Performance of a Kidney Biopsy" during an oral presentation at the 2016 ASN meeting.

The KBA is directed by Drs. Juan Carlos Velez from the Ochsner Clinic and Vandana Niyyar from Emory University.  They are assisted by Drs. Shree Sharma and Nicholas Cossey from Arkana Laboratories, John Duronville from Duke University, and Manisha Singh and Kevin Phelan from UAMS.

2. Career Advancement and Professional Development*, Sponsored by Women in Nephrology

*Will be offered Friday morning

A workshop addressing professional navigation skills, focused on the needs of fellows and junior faculty.

What do I want to do in my career? How do I achieve my professional goals? For both private practice and academic nephrologists, this workshop aims to provide practical tips on negotiation, work-life balance, advocating for yourself, identifying mentors and sponsors, establishing a national reputation, planning for promotion and tenure, and establishing a research program. Discover the skills you need to become a leader in your practice, your institution, and the field of nephrology.

Come find some answers with us at the career advancement and professional development workshop at KIDNEYCON 2019!

The course will be directed by Drs. Manisha Singh of UAMS, Michelle Rheault from the University of Minnesota, Silvi Shah from the University of Cincinnati, Lisa Curtis from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and Mukesh Sharma from AR Renal Group in Hot Springs.

3. House Staff to Physician Scientist: How Do I Get There From Here?*

*Will be offered only on Friday afternoon

This is a hands-on course designed to encourage residents and fellows to understand the pathway to a successful career as a physician scientist. Attendees will learn and practice strategies to identify mentors, improve the mentoring relationship and select and initiate research projects. They will learn how to migrate through various milestones including NIH mechanisms such as T32 training fellowships, F31 and F32 fellowships and mentored training awards including K08, K23 and VA Career Development Awards. We will also review the importance of the Aims page and break up in small groups to critically review in a group setting. Additional components of the workshop will help trainees understand how to maximize their chances of receiving internal grants and grants from specialty societies. At the end of the workshop, the attendees should have a strong understanding of the career development pathway from House Staff to Early Career Scientist and a strategy for navigating it.

This course will be led by Drs. Luis Juncos and John Arthur from UAMS, Matthew Sparks from Duke, Brent Wagner from the University of New Mexico, and Anupam Agarwal from the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

4. Acid/Base Fluids and Electrolytes Workshop

This is a hands-on course focused on hands-on learning. Participants will go through cases and learn fundamental skills for evaluation and management of acid base disturbances and electrolyte derangements.

This course will be taught by Drs. Joel Topf (@kidney_boy) of St. Clair Nephrology, Detroit, MI and Roger Rodby of Rush University Medical Center.

6. Vascular Access Assessment*

*Will be offered only on Friday afternoon

Interventional Nephrology is a relatively new sub-specialty of nephrology that improves patient care and outcomes by active management of dialysis access and other interventional techniques related to nephrology. The majority of procedures are performed by a trained interventional nephrologist in an outpatient setting and include endovascular procedures performed to manage dysfunction of arteriovenous fistulas or grafts, peritoneal dialysis catheter insertion, ultrasound-guided renal biopsy, and insertion and removal of tunneled dialysis catheters. The growing role of the nephrologist in performing these procedures has resulted in improved outcomes including timely management, fewer hospitalizations related to dysfunctional dialysis access, lower costs, and better outcomes. This course will provide an introduction to the field of Interventional Nephrology for residents, nephrology fellows and practicing nephrologists. This will also be a great educational opportunity for dialysis nurses and staff. The course is taught by Drs. Mukesh Sharma with the Arkansas Renal Group in Hot Springs, Arkansas, and Bharat Sachdeva of Louisiana State University.
